6 North Classroom Procedures
1. Come to class prepared and ready to learn with ALL materials (binder, pencils, textbook).
2. Be seated in your assigned seat when the bell rings.
3. Begin your warm-up activity after you've taken your seat.
4. Remain seated unless given permission to get up.
5. Raise your hand and wait to be recognized by teacher before speaking.
6. Wait for the teacher to dismiss you, not the bell.
Nurtured Heart Approach
Nurtured Heart Approach (NHA) is thought of as a discipline system by most, but it really isn't. Instead it is a way of helping students see how they can change their behavior for the better and still praising them for how awesome they really are. There are consequences with NHA, but the emphasis is always on helping the student do better and remember what an important part of my classroom they are.
The most important aspects of NHA, in my opinion, are respect and high expectations. I respect my students when they walk through the door, and I expect them to show respect to everyone in the room and try their absolute best. There are consequences, however, when students aren't showing respect and performing up to expectations.
If a student starts to slip out of focus, I will adhere to the following procedures:
STEP 1--CHILL. I will ask the student to put their head down, think about their behavior, reset themselves, and after a minute they will be welcomed back to class.
STEP 2--CHOICE. If the student still hasn't refocused, I will ask them to make a choice. They will choose between a call home from me, a 30 minute lunch detention, or completion of a quotation sheet (to be turned in the next day).
STEP 3--DISCIPLINE REFERRAL. If the student's unacceptable behavior persists after the first two steps, I will be forced to ask them to leave the classroom. They will receive a Discipline Referral and sent to the office. FMS administrators will then decide the disciplinary action suitable for the student.
Please contact me ([email protected]) with any questions you make have about NHA. I will be happy to go over the approach with you in more detail.
Student Preparedness
FMS students are expected to be prepared for class at all times (Classroom Policy #1). If they arrive to class without their binder and proper equipment for class success, they will receive a 30 minute lunch detention. |
TardiesBe there or be square! Students are expected to be on time to class (Classroom Policy #2). After their first unexcused tardy, they will receive a quote sheet to complete. If this is not returned completed the NEXT day, they will then earn 30 minute lunch detention. |
Homework Policy
Homework is usually due the day after it is assigned. If I assign a special project or paper, you will receive extra time, and you are responsible for writing down the due date in your planner. Please purchase a homework planner, or ask any of your teachers for an assignment sheet, to keep track of your homework for the week.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER ABOUT HOMEWORK IN MY CLASSROOM:
*I almost always give you time to work on homework in class, so there should be no excuse for it to be turned in late.
*If you are absent, you have two days to make up your homework. (2 days for each 1 day of excused absence.)
*There is no excuse for late work. The maximum grade earned for homework turned in one day late is 85%; the maximum grade for homework turned in two days late is 70%; the maximum grade for homework turned in three days late is 50%. Homework turned in more than three days late is a 0.
Parental Involvement
6 North encourages parent involvement and parent contacts. As the year progresses, there will be postings on the website on ways you can help out us, the teachers, help your students more. You can also feel free to e-mail me ([email protected]) if you want to meet with the entire team about a specific issue. Our team meeting time is 11:15-noon, Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Friday.
Here are some ideas for parents and guardians to get involved in 6 North classrooms:
*Call or e-mail me.
*Check this website regularly.
*Make sure your student is writing their assignments in their student planner or on their assignment sheet.
*Be a chaperone on a field trip.
*Attend Open House in the fall.
*Drop by my classroom at anytime to observe.
*Attend parent-teacher conferences.
*Bring snacks for a field trip, ISAT testing, or other special school event.
Grading Scale
I take grades almost everyday in my classroom. I offer my students multiple and varied assignments in order for them to display their understanding and mastery of class curriculum. Daily work, warm-ups, and homework make up 50% of a student's final grade, while major projects & essays, and tests make up the other 50%.
A: 100%-90%
B: 89%-80%
C: 79%-70%
D: 69%-60%
F: 59% and below
